About Les Misérables - Victor Hugo

Published in 1862, one of the most notable in literature (Audiobook)

[Ebook reader of 'Les Miserables']

Les Misérables is a novel by Victor Hugo published in 1862, one of the largest and most notable in 19th century literature.

It describes the life of poor people in Paris and provincial France in the first third of the 19th century, the author focusing more particularly on the fate of the convict Jean Valjean; it has given rise to numerous adaptations, in cinema and on other media.

It is a historical, social and philosophical novel in which we find the ideals of romanticism and those of Victor Hugo concerning human nature. The preface clearly summarizes the author's intentions: "As long as the three problems of the century, the degradation of man by the proletariat, the decline of woman by hunger, the atrophy of the child by night, will not be resolved; in other words, and from an even more extended point of view, as long as there is ignorance and poverty on earth, books of this nature may not be useless.
