It can be challenging to find just the right type of furniture for an eclectic home. In many cases, you may end up making your own furniture from salvaged wood or other materials. A door is often overlooked when choosing salvage materials, but it works exceptionally well when creating quirky furniture. With a handsaw and some nails, you can transform an old door into a new masterpiece.

Dining Room Table

Have you ever wanted a long table, but just could not afford one? Instead of lamenting, salvage an old door and turn it into your new dining room table. Start by sanding the door and then staining or repainting it. Screw in table legs that are pre-made and can be found at most large home improvement stores. A piece of glass that has been cut to size can be placed on the top of the door, and viola! You have an almost instant table for a fraction of the cost.

Headboard

You may have seen headboards made from upholstered plywood and such, but doors also make excellent backdrops for beds. Stand two narrow doors side-by-side to create a tall, vertical look, or position a door on its side across the head of the bed. A shiny, new finish of paint or stain can be added, or you might opt to leave it looking shabby and chic for cottage style appeal.

Desks

Much like tables, desks can be made from old doors. Start by measuring the length needed and cutting the door to size. Use the extra, cut pieces of wood to create a pull-out drawer for a computer keyboard or a shelf along the back of the desk. If the door's surface is uneven, you may want to put a sheet of glass or Plexi-glass over it to create a smooth work surface.

Bookshelf

Transform that old door into a bookshelf by adding two narrower doors to either side of it, and then nailing some wooden shelves in place. The door's sturdiness makes it an excellent choice for providing support and stability to the shelf. The trick is to be sure that the shelves are securely fastened and anchored to the back door, as well as the side doors.

Storage Bins

Measure out the panels and start cutting that old door up into pieces. With four sides and a bottom, the door can become a strong, sturdy storage bin to hold magazines, gardening supplies, or just about anything else you need to store. If you are planning on using it for items that might be wet, put a few coats of shellac on the wood to protect it. You may even want to put a plastic liner in the bin to prevent the wood from warping.

There are many different types of quirky furniture pieces that you can create from old doors. The only limitation is your imagination. With some clever thinking and a few tools, your new piece of furniture can be created from an old, architectural gem.
