*What is Pregnancy

Pregnancy occurs when a sperm fertilizes an egg after it’s released from the ovary during ovulation. The fertilized egg then travels down into the uterus, where implantation occurs. A successful implantation results in pregnancy.

On average, a full-term pregnancy lasts 40 weeks. There are many factors that can affect a pregnancy. Women who receive an early pregnancy diagnosis and prenatal care are more likely to experience a healthy pregnancy and give birth to a healthy baby.

Being sedentary (sitting down a lot) is not healthy for you or your baby.

It puts you at higher risk of too much weight gain, gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia and varicose veins and you are more likely to have shortness of breath and lower back pain.

If you did exercise before you became pregnant, you can continue at the same level but listen to your body and slow down when you feel uncomfortable.

If you didn’t exercise before you became pregnant, you don’t have to take up organised exercise classes, the important thing is to be active. There are tips here to help you build exercise into your day

*Do think about what you eat

Some foods carry a small risk of infections, others can give you food poisoning. Others have too much vitamin A or mercury, which can harm your developing so as pregnant you need to know what you will eat.

*Do monitor your baby’s movements

Your baby’s movements are a sign that they are well. Start monitoring movements at around week 24 and if you notice a reduction in movement seek help immediately.
