The FIFA World Cup has been held 20 times in which 8 countries have won the trophy. Brazil (5), Germany (4), Italy (4), Argentina (2), Uruguay (2), England (1), France (1), Spain (1).

The tournament has a strong dominance of European and South American teams: the first won the title 11 times, while the South Americans won 9 times and only two teams from other geographical confederations have reached the semifinals: the United States in 1930 and Korea South in 2002.

In addition, Brazil (in 1958 and 2002), Spain (in 2010) and Germany (in 2014) have been the only teams that have won outside their continent.

The Soccer World Cup consists of two stages: a qualifying phase and a final round42, considered the latter usually as the event itself.

The number of participants in this final round has varied over the years: 16 participants up to 1978 (with the exception of the 1930 and 1950 world championships with 13 participants each), 24 between 1982 and 1994, 32 from 1998 and soon 48 from 2026.
