The Tula Kremlin is a regular fortress, in the plan it is a rectangle. The architecture of the monument organically combines the age-old traditions of Russian architecture and the best achievements of Western European fortification art.

The Tula Kremlin, unlike most Russian kremlins, is located in a lowland, protected, however, from all sides by natural barriers. From the north-east it was covered in the past by the deep rivers Upa and Tulitsa, from the south-east - by the Khomutovka river, from the south-west - by the Rzhavskoe swamp.
