Neuroimaging research has yielded important information concerning the structure, neurochemistry, and function of the amygdala, medial prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate and hippocampus in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Regions of the brain associated with hyporesponsive, diminished volumes and neuronal integrity are the hypothalamus, inferior parietal lobule, inferior/middle temporal gyrus, medial prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, superior frontal gyrus, anterior cingulate cortex, orbifrontal cortex.
