Organic chemistry is a branch of chemical science that studies hydrocarbons — substances containing carbon and hydrogen, as well as various derivatives of these compounds, including oxygen, nitrogen, and halogen atoms. All such compounds are called organic. Organic chemistry originated in the process of studying those substances that were extracted from plant and animal organisms, consisting mainly of organic compounds.
