St. Tikhon (born Timothy) was born in 1724 in the family of a poor village clerk Korotska (Valdai district) and shortly after birth had lost his parents. Childhood and adolescence have been among his terrible poverty: sometimes a whole day he had to work the inhabitants of his native village for a piece of bread. In 1758, he was tonsured a monk with the name Tikhon. The following year he was appointed rector of the Tver seminary, where he lectured on moral theology.

 In 1761, 37 year of life Hieromonk Tikhon, on explicit orders from above, was elected bishop. About two years he was a vicar in the Novgorod and about four (1763-1767 gg.) Alone led episcopal chair in Voronezh. All the time his bishopric, he diligently taught and encouraged to the same subordinate priests. Holy Tikhon had the gift of insight and making miracles, read the thoughts interlocutors.
