The oxidation state is the conditional charge of an atom in a molecule, if we assume that all molecules are composed of ions. The oxidation state is calculated algebraically, given that the sum of the positive and negative charges in the molecule is zero.

The degree of oxidation indicates the oxidation state of an individual atom of the molecule and is only a convenient method of accounting for electron transfer: it is not the true charge of the atom in the molecule.

Representations of the degree of oxidation of elements are the basis and are used in the classification of chemicals, the description of their properties, the preparation of compounds formulas and their international names (nomenclature). But it is especially widely used in the study of redox reactions.
