Definition of Hafs Recitation

Hadr recitation is reading quickly while observing the rules of Tajweed. It is one of the three levels of recitation, and Hadr is considered the best, completely different from Tahqiq recitation. When Ibn Mujahid was asked, "Who is the best reciter of the Quran?" he replied, "He who has thoroughly studied Hadr." He also said that the best is Tahqiq with contemplation, even if it is with little recitation, because the purpose of the Quran is to understand and act upon it, and its recitation and memorization are only a means to that end. All levels are permissible, and each level has its own status: Tahqiq is for teaching, Hadr is for studying and memorizing, and Tawdir is for understanding and contemplation.

He is Hafs ibn Sulayman ibn al-Mughira Abu Umar ibn Abi Dawud al-Asadi al-Kufi al-Bazzaz, named after the seller of cloth, or "clothes." His kunya was Abu Umar. He was born in the year 90 AH and learned the Quran by heart and by instruction from Asim, whose protégé was Ibn Zawda. Al-Dani said: He is the one who taught Asim's recitation to the people. He settled in Baghdad and taught there, and then moved to Mecca, where he also taught there.

Introduction to Imam Asim ibn Abi al-Najud al-Kufi:

He is Asim ibn Abi al-Najud. It is said that his father's name was Abdullah, his kunya was Abu al-Najud, and Asim's mother's name was Bahdalah. Therefore, he is called Asim ibn Bahdalah, and his kunya was Abu Bakr. He is an Asadi from Kufa, one of the Seven Reciters (Qur'anic reciters) and a prominent Tabi'i. Asim recited the Qur'an under Abu Abd al-Rahman Abdullah ibn Habib ibn Rabi'ah al-Sulami al-Dharir, under Abu Maryam Zur ibn Hubaysh ibn Habashah al-Asadi, and under Abu Amr Sa'd ibn al-Bas al-Shaybani. These reciters recited the Qur'an under Abdullah ibn Mas'ud. Zur and al-Sulami also recited the Qur'an under Uthman ibn Affan and Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with them both). Al-Sulami also recited the Qur'an under Ubayy ibn Ka'b and Zayd ibn Thabit. Ibn Mas'ud, Uthman, Ali, and Zayd recited the Qur'an under the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Asim was the imam who became the sheikh of recitation in Kufa after Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Salami. People traveled to him from all over the world to recite with eloquence, intonation, perfection and clarity. He had the best voice in reciting the Holy Quran.
