Abu Zakariya Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Hizami al-Nawawi al-Shafi'i (631 AH-1233 AD / 676 AH-1277 AD), better known as "al-Nawawi," was a Muslim hadith scholar, jurist, and linguist, and one of the most prominent Shafi'i jurists. He is best known for his numerous books and writings on jurisprudence, hadith, language, and biographies, such as Riyad al-Salihin, al-Arba'in al-Nawawi, Minhaj al-Talibin, and al-Rawdah. He is described as the editor, refiner, corrector, and organizer of the Shafi'i school of thought, as the practice among Shafi'i jurists has been based on what al-Nawawi favors. Al-Nawawi is called the "Sheikh of the Shafi'is," and when the term "the two sheikhs" is used among the Shafi'is, it refers to al-Nawawi and Abu al-Qasim al-Rafi'i al-Qazwini.
