A masterpiece from the forefathers of this great nation, the treatise "Zaghl Al-Ilm" by the scholar and historian of Islam, Al-Dhahabi, may God have mercy on him. In this treatise, he discusses the well-known sciences, and explains his opinion on them and the conditions of those interested in them in his time, such as the science of recitations and tajweed, and the science of hadith. He also discusses the jurists of the four schools of thought of his time, grammar and language, and other related sciences. He explains that their behavior is contrary to the behavior of the first generation of the Companions, the Followers, and the early Imams, may God have mercy on them. He strongly condemns the imitators and ignorant people who adhere to blind imitation without proof or evidence from the Qur'an and Sunnah, to the point that they have become a bane. A stumbling block for scholars and their seekers. He also mentioned those who have taken knowledge as a means and goal to attain worldly pleasures and its fleeting ruins, namely the evil scholars whose sole purpose in seeking knowledge is to enjoy worldly pleasures and attain fame and status among its people. The author - may God have mercy on him - explained that if knowledge is not put to use, it is of no benefit; rather, it is a calamity for its possessor, a source of shame, regret, and remorse. He also explained the method of the Salaf in seeking and acquiring knowledge, and that they traveled extensively for this purpose. This is a brief treatise and a small booklet by Imam Al-Dhahabi, may God have mercy on him. You can summarize it in the line with which he begins his book: "Know, may God Almighty guide you, that in every group of scholars of the Ummah there is something that is condemned and criticized, and that should be avoided." Then he goes on to detail that: What is criticized about the excellent reciters - those who recite the Qur'an well - is their recitation at funerals, their reputation, and the hypocrisy of some of them. What is criticized about some hadith scholars is their lack of concern for the authenticity of hadiths, instead focusing on narration. As for some Maliki jurists, they are criticized for their leniency regarding bloodshed, and the Hanafi jurists for their use of jurisprudential tricks. As for the Shafi'is, although the Imam praised them - and he is one of them - he advised that none of them should aim for positions and should not debate what they do not believe in. Thus, he discussed grammarians, linguists, legal theorists, logicians, writers, preachers, and the like.

He is Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Uthman ibn Qaymaz ibn Abdullah al-Turkmani, originally from al-Farqi, then from Damascus, Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi, a hadith scholar, imam, and hafiz. He combined two qualities that are only found in a few exceptional figures in our history. In addition to his extensive knowledge of Islamic history, both events and figures, he combined extensive knowledge of the principles of criticism and validation of men, establishing a unique school of thought. Imam Al-Dhahabi is one of the scholars who entered the field of history through the lens of Prophetic hadith and its sciences. This was evident in his meticulous attention to biographies, which became the basis of many of his books and the focus of his historical thought. It is said that Imam Al-Dhahabi was called "the Golden One" because he weighed men as a jeweler weighs gold.

Imam Al-Dhahabi's work in this book is to draw attention to a category in every art form. Among the reciters, he criticizes those who exaggerate in pronouncing letters correctly and paying attention to every vowel in words, neglecting to pay attention to the intended meaning of what they are reading, its understanding, and its interpretation. Among the modern reciters, he condemns those whose sole concern is listening and narrating, neglecting the meanings of the words of the Chosen One.
