An orphan girl named Judy Abbott received a scholarship to study at Lincoln High School by a person she did not know whose pseudonym was John Smith. Judy called him "the owner of the long shadow" because she had never seen anything but his shadow. The only payment that Smith required Judy in return for the grant is that she writes to him once a month, without necessarily expecting a response from him to her letters.
