■What is a castle?

・Yayoi period (ring moat village)

With the beginning of agriculture, conflicts broke out in various places, so villages were surrounded by fences, walls, and deep moats, and moated villages with watchtowers and other features appeared. This is said to be the origin of Japanese castles.

・Asuka - Nara period (ancient mountain castle)

Ancient mountain castles began to be built throughout western Japan in preparation for invasions from continental countries such as China and Korea. It was used only in times of war as it was a defensive wall, and people lived at the foot of the mountain during peacetime.

・Nara - Heian period (castle fence)

Castle fences were built to control Emishi in the Tohoku region. The aforementioned ancient mountain castles eventually passed without any invasion from the mainland, and the need for castle fences as bases for defense and invasions diminished with the return of the Emishi.

・Late Heian period to Muromachi period (medieval mountain castle)

As samurai society developed, armed conflicts between samurai began to occur, and castles developed as defense facilities for use in peacetime and wartime. Medieval mountain castles became popular with Masashige Kusunoki's ``Chihaya Castle Cage Battle.'' Also, many castles from this era were built with clay, and most of them no longer exist.

・Sengoku to Azuchi-Momoyama period (early modern mountain castles)

Mountain castles are increasingly being built on relatively gentle mountains, and castles that emphasize livability are also appearing. Azuchi Castle, which had a full-fledged castle tower and the castle towns of Rakuichi and Rakuza, was built around this time. After the birth of Azuchi Castle, castles with castle towers, stone walls, and castle towns became popular.

・The end of the Sengoku period to the Edo period (Hirayama Castle/Heijo)

In the Sengoku period, castles began to be used not only as military defense bases, but also as administrative bases. A castle town was built around the castle, where the townspeople lived, and it developed as an economic center. As a result, the places where castles were built moved from mountains to plains, and ``Hirayama Castle'' and ``Heijo'' became mainstream.
