Science experiences are essential for all students because science promotes understanding of the natural world and nurtures students' abilities to make informed decisions.

At its most fundamental, science is the search for patterns and the study of cause and effect.

Careful observation, inquisitiveness, sequential thinking, logical reasoning, and creativity are cornerstones of good science, and we expect all students to exhibit these traits as they explore and apply scientific principles.

The grade one science program fosters the development of an inquiring mind through a scientific approach to problem solving.

Students learn and apply the skills of observing, questioning, measuring, collecting data, predicting and communicating about scientific content.

Careful observation and measurement is a way of learning and helps students separate fact from fiction.

First grade science experiences include :

+ Growing Seeds :

exploration of the stages of life as well as physical conditions that promote plant growth—students distinguish between living and non-living things and describe some things that plants and animals need to live and grow

+ Environment :

observation and reflection upon aspects of the interconnectedness of living things and their environments—students develop an awareness of resources and cycles in nature

+ Ourselves :

investigation of the human body—students examine the roles of the senses, the heart, and the lungs and develop an appreciation of the similarities and differences among people

+ Measuring is Knowing :

developing measurement skills through the use of standard and non-standard measurements and the use of various measuring tools in science settings

An age-appropriate and skill-appropriate challenge involving the engineering design process is currently under development and may be piloted during 2014-2015.
