A monitoring system for ensuring the safety and rights of externalized workers
Labour migration is an important factor supporting the growth and development of economies, filling labour shortages in countries of destination and providing the much-needed employment opportunities for workers in countries of origin. High unemployment, underemployment, and family pressure due to poverty and extended family responsibilities are some of the key factors that push people to seek a job abroad. The remittances from these migrant workers have had a great contribution in addressing an escalating balance of payments crisis in origin countries. Labour export is usually done by Labour Export/Import companies, but sometimes individuals may opt to travel on their own. Through this process, people may be abused, maltreated, go missing or face other unpleasant circumstances and have no means to access help or to contact the Labour agency/company, making it even harder for the labour agencies to find a starting point from which to intervene. Ahindi through a mobile and web application provides a transparent mechanism for migrant workers worldwide to detect and report abuse and violation of any human rights, and also ensuring that these reported issues are resolved in real time. It offers a clear line of communication between the migrant worker and the Labour export agency in the chain of responsibility. Last known locations, a chat room, brothers’ keeper, a newsfeed etc are some of the features the solution offers. All this service can be provided at a relatively affordable subscription plan which can be paid either by the travelling individual and or his or selected next of kin
