Kitab al-Ibanah 'an Usul al-Diyanah was accused of being a proof for the Wahhabis who said that the thought of al-Imam Abu al-Hassan al-Ash'ari went through three stages of development in his life. It must be admitted, that al-Imam Abu al-Hassan al-Ash'ari in the book al-Ibanah and some other books is also attributed to him following a different methodology from the books that have been written by him.

In the book of al-Ibanah, al-Imam Abu al-Hassan al-Asy`ari follows the tafwidh methodology followed by the majority of Salaf scholars with regard to mutasyabihat verses. Based on this, some groups understand that al-Imam Abu al-Hassan al-Ash'ari has actually left his second school, namely the school of Ibn Kullab, and has now turned to the Salaf methodology.
