Many regions of India have seen an increase in Ayyappan popularity. The most well-known Ayyappan shrine is at Sabarimala, which is tucked away in the Pathanamthitta hills of Kerala. The shrine is one of the most busy pilgrimage locations in the world, drawing millions of visitors each year in late December and early January, many of whom spend weeks preparing before climbing the hill barefoot. Ayyappan is thought to be a celibate deity, hence pilgrims from all social or economic backgrounds are welcomed, with the exception of women who are fertile.

Ayyappan is depicted alongside women in some of his grihastha (married, householder) temples. There may be a past connection between Aiyanar, a Tamil deity, and Ayyappan. The Makaravilakku (Makara Sankranti), which is celebrated around the winter solstice, is the festival most closely associated with him.

The ancient term Arya, which has a similar phonology to the name Ayyappan (also spelled Ayyappa or Aiyappan), may be connected. Ancient Hindu and Buddhist writings use the Sanskrit word Arya (Pali: Ariya), which signifies "spiritually noble, outstanding, priceless ones." But since the word Ayyappan is absent from South Indian translations of the Puranas from the Middle Ages, scholars have speculated that Ayyappan might have origins elsewhere.

The alternative explanation connects it to the Tamil word appa, which means "father," and the Malayali term acchan, which means "Lord-father." The alternative hypothesis is supported by the fact that Ayyappan is also known by the Vedic name Sastava (Sasta, Sashta, Sastra), which also means "Teacher, Guide, Lord, and Ruler." The Puranas contain the words Sastha and Dharmasastha, which refer to Hindu deities.
