João Ferreira Annes d'Almeida was an important personality of Portuguese Protestantism, especially known for having translated the Bible into Portuguese.

Son of Catholic parents, João Almeida was born in Torre de Tavares, Portugal. He traveled to Holland and, at the age of 14, left for Asia, passing through Batavia, on the island of Java, Indonesia. At that time, Batavia was the administrative center of the Dutch East India Company in Southeast Asia.

In 1642 he converted to the Dutch Reformed Church, and immediately devoted himself to translating passages from the Gospels from Castilian to Portuguese.
