Happy Boxing Day 2023 : Happy Boxing Day! A national holiday in Italy, St. Stephen's Day commemorates the saint, who is considered Christianity's first martyr around December 26, 34 AD.

After spending Christmas at home with family, many Italians pack their bags and head out into the cold with friends for a walk, a traditional stroll along the main streets of their cities. The cobblestone streets that were silent the day before come alive with small groups of people, wishing each other well. Traditionally, the walks revolve around the local nativity scene (some even performed live by local citizens!), where people remember Boxing Day and make a donation to their church.

Beyond the usual walk, however, every Italian city has its own tradition of celebrating Boxing Day. Some organize colorful festivals or religious processions; others focus on donating to local hospitals or charities. In northern Padua in the Veneto region, more than 300 residents re-enact a story about Saint Stephen each year, while in southern Puglia, residents of Putignano remember when the saint's relics were temporarily protected in their city with an ancient festival almost entirely in dialect. From north to south, however, families and friends will gather for a big midday celebration. It is still Italy after all!
