About Catholic Bible

The Audio Bible for Catholics to listen to anytime without internet connection

The Holy Bible is a gift of God's grace. Now you can access for free the online version of the Catholic Bible, which offers the complete list of books accepted by the Catholic Church, including the Deuterocanonical books.

Why does the Catholic Bible have more books than the Protestant Bible?

The Catholic Bible has 73 books while the Protestant Bible has only 66 because the Protestants have taken out some books. Until the Protestant reform of 1517, the Bible was the same for all, with 72 books. After the Reformation, Luther and the reformers withdrew 7 books from the Bible.

There were two Old Testament Bibles, one called Jewish and one Catholic. The Jewish Bible was made in the year 100 after Christ. The Catholic Bible was made 200 years before Christ. There was that famous library in Alexandria founded by Alejandro the Great. The king of Egypt, Ptolemy, wanted to have all the books in the library, but did not have the Bible.

And that's why he brought 70 Jewish rabbis from the Holy Land into Egypt to translate the Bible from Hebrew into Greek, the language spoken in Alexandria. This version was called the Septuagint and was always accepted by the Catholic Church.

100 years after Christ the Jewish rabbis in Palestine defined their books of the Bible and according to nationalist criteria they took out some books. Therefore, we have two Old Testament Bibles, the Septuagint of 200 years before Christ and the Jewish Bible of 100 years after Christ.

The Catholic Church always followed the Septuagint, but Luther chose the Jewish Bible which had 7 books less than the Septuagint Bible. That's why the Protestant Bible was 7 books less: Maccabees I, Maccabees II, Judith, Ecclesiasticus, Wisdom, Baruch and parts of Esther and Daniel.

The Catholic Church regards these books as canonical, that is, inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Thus, the Old Testament of the Catholic Bible has 46 books. The New Testament is identical for both confessions, consisting of 27 books.
