Still with a piston-faced design, Pinnacle Machines was founded by Monty Cleeves in August 2007 in America with the drive to make fuel engines more efficient. The engine developed is a machine with a high compression ratio, four steps, spark ignited (SI), opposing-piston, and valve engine-valve. The engine is capable of producing indicating specific fuel consumption (ISFC) between 30-60% at low load and 12-30% medium load compared to conventional popet-valve valve technology. However, there is no ISFC improvement at high load. There are two configurations in this machine design, fixed geometry versions with lower features for emerging market targets, and variable variable compression ratio (VCR) valve train variables (VVT); External EGR; turbocharger; direct injection) for more sophisticated multi-cylinder applications in automotive.
Some interesting ideas that try to be developed for combustion engines are increasing the ratio of surface area to the burning volume, increasing the compression ratio, reducing mileage and piston speed, reducing moving parts, reducing combustion duration, increasing volumetric efficiency with turbocharger or supercharger, using variable injection system and the geometry that adapts to the conditions continue to be applied in the hope of improving engine efficiency and reducing exhaust emissions. These ideas are not all new, some have been applied in conventional machines such as injection systems, geometry variables, turbochargers and superchargers. The above machine design is largely still in the development, testing and preparatory stage of mass production, so we can commercially see the fastest in the next 2-5 years.
