Details of Study:
This study aims to collect perceptions of personal safety in the environment. Resulting data can highlight areas that people perceive as unsafe when traveling through them. It is hoped that this way we get a description of where people feel uncomfortable and unsafe, and highlight areas that should be focused on to make London a safer place. By participating in this study you can help us map your local area as well as areas you frequently travel through or spend time in, and have your voice heard.
Who? Anyone with an android mobile phone
Where? You will not be asked to go anywhere different. You will only be asked to go about your day-to-day life as normal, traveling to work and home and other places as you normally would.
What? You will be asked to complete a quick pre-experiment questionnaire when you first open the app, and then use it to report about your perceptions of safety as you go about your everyday life. You will be sent reminders to complete a questionnaire. This questionnaire will take about one minute. You are also encouraged to submit data points at other times, not when prompted by a reminder, but when you experience an event that you would like to report. There are two ways of doing this, one way you report something as it happens. This way you chose the “report something now” option. The other way is to first remove yourself from the situation, then later, when you have time report the incident, use the “report a previous incident” option.
We would like to stress that you do not put yourself in vulnerable situations during the course of this study. We advise that if you experience a situation where you feel unsafe, you first remove yourself from the situation, and use the ‘report a previous incident’ option once you are back in a safe place.
If at any time you have any questions or comments, or would like further information on anything, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Please discuss the information above with others if you wish or ask us if there is anything that is not clear or if you would like more information.
It is up to you to decide whether to take part or not; choosing not to take part will not disadvantage you in any way. If you do decide to take part you are still free to withdraw at any time and without giving a reason.
All data will be collected and stored in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998. No personal data will be kept. Any personal data submitted will be deleted and your responses will be completely anonymized.
If you are interested in the outcome of this research after your participation please let me know and I will be happy to share any results and findings once they emerge.
