Tower defense with plastic army men on a bedroom carpet. They came a hundred to a bag — green on one side, tan on the other, and the whole war fought on the floor.

Green vs Tan is a strategy game played with those same toy soldiers: the stiff little ones on the molded bases that lived under the couch. Set your riflemen down on the rug, hold the line, then take the whole bag of them up the carpet and smash the Tan's toy box.

Three hits and he is a casualty

• The Tan shoot back. Three hits and a man goes over for good — and half his sticker price comes back to the purse in dog tags

• Drag your men into a new shape any time you like. The waves do not stop and neither do you

• Your toy box counts down from ten. A rifleman who walks past your line costs you one of them, and THE TIN REX costs you six

The war that does not end

• A boss on every third level, and THEIR SARGE makes his last stand at level 100

• Clear their last wave and the bugle goes: CHARGE. Smashing their toy box is the only way a level ends

• THE BIG SHOT, the RUNAWAY PIGGY BANK, THE TIN REX and THEIR SARGE, who brought a saber

• Every soldier promotes — a hundred ranks of it. Dog tags on the field, stars for the win

Up to ten commanders on one carpet

• BRING YOUR BUDDIES: start a squad, read out the code, and up to ten of you hold the same rug. Beat the level and everybody's campaign moves up

• The Tan army grows with the room, but slower than your guns do — ten of you have an easier carpet than one

• PRIVATE BATTLE for people already in the house, and multiplayer war on the battleground from 1v1 to 10v10, against people or the machine

• Six maps, including THE WINTER FIELD — snow and thin ice — and WESTERN LAND, where the train set took over the desert

Every man is a piece you place

• The rifleman with the long steady trigger, and the machine gunner who sits right up front

• The bazooka for their armor, the mortar that reaches any spot on the carpet, and the sweeper who seeds it with firecracker mines

• The flamethrower, a soldier carrying soup if you leave him too far back, and the radio man, who lends his reach to everyone near him

• Sarge is free, always, and he works his way up from the service pistol to a shotgun, a sniper rifle, or something that glows

• A toy store you walk through yourself: NEW RECRUITS, THE MOTOR POOL, THE MOD BENCH, PAINT AND DYE, ROOM DECORATIONS, THE BACK COUNTER, THE CRYSTAL CASE and the fireworks stand

• The scout jeep and the heavy tank take four plates of armor apiece, and factory green is always free at the dye jar. THE JET PACK is earned on the carpet and never sold

The room, and what comes for it

• Beat the daily rival five days running and the piggy takes its first coat of paint and pays you stars every day. Miss a day and it pops back to pink
