What is the high bog Horreby Lyng

Horreby Lyng is Falster's only high bog and the largest in Lolland-Falster. With its 150 ha it is firmly planted in the landscape. The high moss has arisen from the erosion of a meltwater lake, as the plants, together with peat bogs the so-called Sphagnum, have grown beyond the water surface. The habitats found in a high bog are all nutrient poor.

During World War II, a massive recovery of peat began in the marsh. A mind-boggling system of canals was established to dewater the marsh. This dewatering has resulted in a massive drying out of the high bog, which has caused the unique high bog types to almost disappear.

In 2013, the Municipality of Guldborgsund received funding from the EU LIFE support scheme for a nature restoration project in Horreby Lyng. The aim of the project has been to ensure a wet moss so that the high moss natural environment can be restored.
