The Second World War is the largest armed conflict that humanity has seen, mobilizing more than 100 million fighters from 61 nations, deploying hostilities over some 22 million km25, and killing about 62 million people, a majority of civilians. Not only opposing nations, the Second World War was also the greatest ideological war of history, which explains why the forces of collaboration in Europe and Asia occupied were able to stand in solidarity with invading or enemy countries, or a resistance could have existed right in the heart of Nazi Germany at war. Total war, it erases almost completely the separation between civilian and military spaces and gives rise in both camps to a massive mobilization of resources not only material - economic and scientific - but also moral and political, in a commitment of entire societies.
