Early Learning Course to support educators working with children in the pre-primary year:

• Offer children a quality early education that will result in a good start in Grade One;

• Build a team of teachers and parents/carers to support children moving into Grade One;

• Monitor children’s development towards school readiness and take relevant action.

There are ten modules in the course:

Module 1: Values and principles

Module 2: Building a team around the child

Module 3: Observation as a way of monitoring readiness

Module 4: Thinking about a supportive learning environment

Module 5: Discipline with dignity

Module 6: Identity and belonging

Module 7: Physical development

Module 8: Communication

Module 9: Creativity and exploration

Module 10: Supporting transition

Some important ideas cut across all the modules in this course. These are:

1. Meaningful play is central to children’s learning

2. Building a team of adults around the child

3. Children are competent human beings

4. Adults and children working co-operatively and collaboratively
