Tajweed (Arabic: , translit. tajwīd‎) literally means to do something nicely and beautifully or nice and good. Tajweed comes from the word jawwada (جوّد-يجوّد-تجويدا) in Arabic. In the science of Qiraah, tajwid means removing letters from their place by giving them the characteristics they have. So the science of recitation is a science that studies how to sound or pronounce the letters contained in the holy book of the Qur'an or not.

The problems raised in this science are makharijul letters (places to enter and exit letters), shifatul letters (how to pronounce letters), ahkamul letters (relationships between letters), ahkamul maddi wal qasr (long and short speech), ahkamul waqaf wal ibtida' (starting and stopping the recitation), and al-Khat al-Uthmani.

Another understanding of the science of recitation is to convey as well as possible and perfectly from each recitation of the verses of the Qur'an. The scholars state that the law for studying recitation is fardhu kifayah but practicing recitation when reading the Qur'an is fardu ain or obligatory for men and women who are converts or adults.
