Jacuaçu Cantando

Also known as jacu-velho (Rio Grande do Sul), jacuaçu, jacu and jacupixuna. Deforestation and indiscriminate hunting have drastically reduced the population of this species.

Penelope is a genus of craciform birds, which contains fifteen species. The group is found in Central and South America, where it inhabits forest zones. In Brazil, they receive the popular name of jacu; in the United States of America, guans, and in Spanish-speaking countries, pava. Seven species occur in Brazil. The jacus are large birds, which can reach 85 cm in length. The tail is long and rounded, as are the wings. The neck is relatively long and ends in a small head. The skin around the eyes is exposed and has a bluish color in most species. Jaguars have a red, bulging crop in the throat area. The plumage is uniform and dark, generally black and with a scaly appearance. This effect is produced by the feathers on the back and chest, which are edged in white. Most jacus have reddish paws.
