John Ryle

In days when evangelical preachers are accused of being either superficial or dull, we have here a great example from one who was neither of these things. As John Ryle speaks by the pen in his hand and applies his texts with his customary simplicity and directness, any reader will find his conscience pricked and his soul examined.

Ryle is rightly noted for the marvelous simplicity of his style and many have tried, so far in vain, to emulate his style of writing, for it was not him as a man writing, but it was Jesus doing it through him. To be simple, plain and direct without being superficial, formal and offensive is not as easy as some would think, yet Ryle achieved this consistently and effectively, in most if not all of his tracts. His sermons, reflecting the directness of the spoken word, are fine examples to all who would like to communicate more effectively with the man in the pew or the street.
