JWrite: Japanese Writing

The Japanese writing system is composed of three main scripts: Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji.

• Hiragana is a phonetic script primarily used for native Japanese words, grammatical elements, and verb conjugations.

• Katakana is another phonetic script, mainly used for foreign loanwords, onomatopoeia, and certain proper nouns.

• Kanji are Chinese characters adopted into Japanese, representing words or meanings rather than sounds.

These three scripts are often used together in Japanese writing to form complete sentences.

With this app, you can learn to read and write Japanese characters, from the basics (all Hiragana and Katakana) to the intermediate level (Kyoiku Kanji—the set of 1,026 basic kanji that Japanese elementary school students are required to learn).
