Kitab Kimiau Assa'adah

The book "Kimiya 'al-Sa'adah is the 45th work of Imam al-Ghazali. He wrote this book in Parsian language {كميائي سعادات} and has been translated into several languages, including: Arabic, English, Italian, Urdu, etc.

Kimiya 'al-Sa'adah means particles in humans which are managed to achieve happiness; transmutes base metals into gold. The aspects of happiness are achieved by:

i. Know Yourself

ii. Knowing Allah

iii. Knowing the Nature of the World

iv. Knowing the Nature of the Hereafter

The chemistry of happiness is achieved through the process of takhalli (emptying) and tahalli (decorating), namely:

a. educate the soul by avoiding ugliness and purifying it from it (emptying oneself from badness)

b. reach out for virtue and adorn the soul with it (good deeds)

as tips for self-identification, Imam al-Ghazali invites ourselves to do the following monologues:

i. What kind are you?

ii. Where did you come from?

iii. What were you made for?

iv. What are you happy with?

v. And because of what are you miserable?

أي شيء أنت؟ ومن أين جئت إلى هذا المكان؟ ولأي شيء خلقت؟ وبأي شيء سعادتك؟ وبأي شيء شقاؤك؟

The particles in humans and their patterns of happiness:

a- صفات البهائم (Animal Characteristics)  be happy with the fulfillment of the needs of eating, drinking, sleeping and sex

b- صفات السباع (The nature of a beast)  happy because it can hit and kill

c- صفات الشياطين (The nature of the devil)  to be happy by doing treason, crime and trickery.

d- صفات الملائكة (The nature of angels)  be happy because they feel the beauty of Allah's presence in his life. This is achieved by recognizing the origin and nature of oneself

Recognizing the substance of oneself with Science

القلب مفتاح لمعرفة الله

That heart is the key to knowing Allah.

Whoever has lost the will to attain Knowledge, then that person is like someone who has exhausted his appetite for good food; or like someone who would rather eat soil than eat bread.

So the essence of true happiness is the eternal spiritual essence, belief in absolute things about the nature of nature, self-identity and the purpose of life. All of it begins with knowledge and leads to mahabbatullah.
