Toraja comes from the Bugis language, namely "To Riaja". The word has the meaning of people who live in the land above. The name Toraja was inaugurated as a tribal name in 1909 by the Dutch colonial government.

The origin of the Toraja people is from the Gulf of Tonkin which is located between southern China and Vietnam. At first, the ancestors of the Toraja tribe inhabited the coastal areas in Sulawesi before finally moving to the highlands.

The Dutch had traded and had political power in Sulawesi since the 17th century. But for about 2 centuries they did not pay attention to the area inhabited by the Toraja Tribe, namely the highlands of Central Sulawesi.

The reason is simple, because the area is difficult to reach. In addition, there is not much productive land that can be obtained and provide benefits.
