Power plant engineering is a branch of mechanical engineering and thermal sciences related to the production of electric power. It is the development, construction, and operation of power stations that generate usable electrical energy from primary sources such as coal, natural gas, nuclear fuel, wind and solar energy.

The power plant engineering deals with the design, construction and maintenance of the power plants using natural resources. These are the thermal power plants, nuclear power plants and renewable energy based power plants. The Power Plant is a group of four hydroelectric generating stations on the Niagara River, straddling the international border between Ontario, Canada and New York, United States. It is owned by Ontario Power Generation (OPG). The four plants have a combined output of 4,410 megawatts (MW), and are located about 30 km (19 mi) south of Niagara Falls, on the Canadian side.

The power plant is the backbone of industrial development in any region. It is responsible for generating power to meet industrial requirements, and also serve residential purposes. They are mainly categorized into thermal and hydro type plants. Thermal power plants are further classified into coal-based, gas-based, oil-based, nuclear, solar, biomass etc. Plants based on coal and gas are the most common type of power plants found across the world.

Hydropower is a major renewable power technology that harnesses the energy of falling water or fast running water. It is one of the oldest sources of clean renewable energy. However, the demand for hydropower has been increasing in recent years because of growing concerns about climate change and the depletion of non-renewable resources.

Because it requires no combustion, this type of generation is also considered emissions-free.
