When everyone died, my grandfather used to say, something to leave behind.

A child, a book, a table, a house or wall, built of a pair of shoes. Or a planted garden. Something his hand touched, so that his soul would go when he died; So when people look at the tree or flower you planted, you're there.

It doesn't matter what you do, as long as you change it when you touch it and turn it into something that looks like you when you pull your hands away.

Only the difference between the lawnmower and the gardener is in touch, he said. The man who mows the lawn is like he never was there; The gardener will be there for a lifetime.
