Hegel's logic is a dialectical metaphysics, or system of dialectics; it is a development of the idea that thought and being are one active entity. The classic Aristotelian syllogism is included in Science of Logic as well; however, it is envisioned as a stage of the "initial unity of thinking and existence" rather than as an impersonal, formal tool of reasoning.

Hegel considered Immanuel Kant's assertion that thought shapes reality (being) from the inside out and that reality (being) is, in many ways, identical to thought to be the most significant contribution of German idealism, which began with Kant and culminated in his own philosophy.
