The Mediterranean Sea is a sea connected to the Atlantic Ocean, bordered by Europe in the north, Africa in the south, and Asia in the east. Covering an area of approximately 2.5 million km², the sea is separated from the Atlantic Ocean by the Strait of Gibraltar, from the Marmara Sea by the Dardanelles Strait, and from the Red Sea by the Suez Canal. The salinity rate of the Mediterranean is 38‰ (38 per thousand), and it is evaluated in the group of seas with high salt content.

It is an immense inland sea in the world. It is a deep-sea and has many pits exceeding 4000 meters in depth. The Eastern Mediterranean Basin is more profound than the Western Mediterranean Basin. Salinity is high, especially in the Eastern Mediterranean. In part between Cyprus and Egypt, the salinity rate reaches 39 per thousand. Twenty-two countries have a coast on the Mediterranean.

Countries with a coast on the Mediterranean are called "Mediterranean countries." These countries have specific characteristics. In these countries, the summer months are hot and dry. The Winter months are rainy and warm. Mediterranean waters evaporate due to the scorching heat in summer. The sea can recover only a tiny amount of the water lost by evaporation. Rivers and precipitation provide this recovery process. Since very little of the lost water is returned to the sea, the salinity rate in the Mediterranean waters is relatively high. And this rate is increasing. Salty water sinks to the bottom of the sea due to its characteristics. This sinking water cannot pass into the Atlantic Ocean because the threshold of the Strait of Gibraltar is 305 meters below the water surface. The salty water that sinks to the bottom is even below 350 meters. The Mediterranean, which cannot recover the lost moisture with rivers and rains, meets the lost water with the currents coming from the Strait of Gibraltar. Thus, the amount of water in the sea is balanced.

Apart from Gibraltar, currents from the Black Sea also reach the Mediterranean and feed this seawater. If no winds were providing the Mediterranean, the sea would have gotten smaller and smaller and would have disappeared over time. Thanks to the Strait of Gibraltar that is, the waters are coming from the Atlantic Ocean. The waters of the Mediterranean change entirely between 80 and 100 years.
