ABOUT
The creation of the Play Kindly tool originated from an invitation in 2004. Esther who was the PACIFICA Auckland Central Branch President at the time, invited Dr Seth Scholer of
Van Derbilt University to present his original version of the tool, ‘Play Nicely’ to members of the branch. Two years later permission was obtained from Professor Scholer for Esther to research how useful Play Nicely was to a group of Pacific people in a small country town. An outcome of the study was to produce a more relatable tool to help young people and Pacific parents make good choices about disciplinary strategies for children’s’ aggressive behaviour. After a very brief post - PhD period of rest and recovery, Tafa Dr Cowley-Malcolm approached Ali Cowley, a well- known and experienced Pacific animator, to work with her on producing a tool that would be relatable to Pacific people. Tafa Dr Cowley-Malcolm and Ali Cowley decided on a game App and recruited Oscar Kightley – the third member of the team – to write the script for the animated scenarios.
Funding for the project was successful when Tafa Dr Cowley-Malcolm was awarded the Quaker Peace and Service Loxley Award because ‘Play Kindly’ was in alignment with Quaker principles of peace and social justice. However, it was far from sufficient and much of the work involved in producing this tool has come from the passion and dedication of a team of people to ‘pay it forward’ rather than seek monetary payment. For that the ‘Play Kindly’ team are truly grateful.
