Pupuh is a traditional form of Javanese poetry that has a certain number of syllables and rhymes on each line. There are 17 types of poems, each of which has its own characteristics and is used for different story themes.

Macapat is usually divided into a number of poems, while each poem is divided into several. Every poem uses the same meter. This meter usually depends on the nature of the contents of the text being told.
