The cornea is normally round in shape, but Keratoconus causes it to become conical, hence it is also known as “Conical Cornea”. Keratoconus is the result of thinning that occurs in the cornea, due to normal eye pressure that pushes the weakened surface and deforms it.

Keratoconus is a rare eye condition. It is estimated that it affects 1 in every 2,000 people, regardless of their sex, race, geographic or social condition. Although it occurs more frequently in patients with Down syndrome, allergies or congential amaurosis (a rare form of blindness at birth).

To date, research continues to determine its causes, however there are various theories that attribute its development to genetic, allergic and environmental factors.

This deformation significantly interferes with the patient's vision, since those who suffer from it perceive blurred and distorted images.

Generally, a patient with keratoconus tends to present myopia associated with astigmatism when examined. At an early stage, slight visual impairment may be noted.
