This ancient Chinese concoction turned out to be effective in eradicating tuberculosis

A research team recently revealed that herbal remedies from hundreds of years ago by Chinese researchers were proven to cure malaria, but it also helped cure tuberculosis and even slowed bacterial immunity to drugs.

In 2015, tuberculosis is estimated to be the cause of death of 2 million people.

The causative bacterium, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, requires oxygen to "invade" the human body. The human immune system tries to block oxygen for the bacteria to control infections.

The team under the leadership of microbiologist Robert Abramovitch of Michigan State University examined more than 500 thousand substances during the study and found that artemisinin stopped the ability of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) to hide (dormant).

To note, when the stages are hiding, the use of antibiotics often become ineffective.

As quoted from Ancient Origins on Friday (12/30/2016), artemisinin is extracted from a kind of cinnamon plant Artemisia annua which is one of the ingredients of traditional Chinese medicine.

Through the university's website, Abramovitch explained, "When TB bacteria are dormant, they become very resistant to antibiotics. Keeping them from hiding makes TB bacteria more sensitive to the drug and shortens treatment time."

"If Mtb cannot sense low oxygen levels, he cannot enter the dormant stage and will die."

Abramovitch also suggested that tuberculosis in hiding could be crossed and inactive for decades in the human body.

However, if the human immune system is weakened one day, the bacteria can build and spread.

Whether awake or sleeping, the researchers observed that it usually takes 6 months to cure TB and this is one of the main reasons that the disease is difficult to control.

Abramovitch firmly believes that his research is the key to shortening therapy because it can eradicate sleep bacteria that are difficult to eradicate. This can lead to improved patient care outcomes and slow the evolution of drug-resistant TB bacteria.

Ancient Potion efficacious

The discovery of an ancient recipe is not the first time. In the book Kitab al-tabikh written by Ibn Sayyar al-Warraq, there are more than 600 recipes for culinary and medicinal food, including one of the drugs against hangovers.
