[This is what I created it with]
Hello, my name is Takashi Akutsu and I run a cafe called fuzkue, a book store located in Hatsudai, Shimokitazawa and Nishi-Ogikubo, where you can only read.
I started this store because I love reading. I spend my days watching the backs of customers who spend their time reading books.
My books include "Looking for a place to read books," which describes the events and thoughts leading up to starting fuzkue, and the "Reading Diary" series, which is a collection of the reading diary I have been writing daily since 2016.
There was something I was always thinking about while running a store for reading for over 10 years.
The idea is that "if more people could enjoy reading more casually, in the same way they enjoy listening to music."
I think most music lovers don't think, "I haven't been able to listen to any music this month," or "I haven't been able to listen to that album until the end," or "I can't think of a good review, so I can't write it." I'm sure there are some who do, but I think it's only critics or people who aspire to be critics.
However, when it comes to reading, I've always thought that there are suddenly more people who feel like they have to do homework or that they're incomplete.
Reading is something that is easy to feel "reluctant to," like "I have to read it," "I have to finish it," "I have to understand it properly and put it into a good review," and it can easily become a task.
When I was keeping track of when I finished reading, even if it wasn't very interesting, I would finish it because if I stopped halfway through, it would be recorded as nothing. I sometimes wondered what to do about finishing anthologies or magazines.
Also, when I was writing book reviews on my blog, I always had this feeling of homework in my mind, thinking, "What should I pick up?" or "How should I summarize it?", and I often felt it was a burden.
But reading is not about finishing a book or saying something after reading it, it's about reading. The time you spend reading is what reading is all about.
Whether you finish a book or not, whether you have something good to say or not, if there is something sparkling about the time you are reading, then you can say that you are thoroughly enjoying reading.
For me, I found it very liberating to start keeping track of what I read today, rather than when I finish reading.
I record the books I read that day in a spreadsheet every day. This way, even books I don't finish will be recorded.
It may seem silly, but it's made things a lot easier. I've come to think that I don't have to force myself to finish a book.
Also, in terms of impressions, starting to write a reading diary was a big help.
Here, the main topics of descriptions about books are the time spent wondering around the bookstore, the excitement before starting to read, where and how you read, and quotes from passages that really touched you.
You can write impressions or not, and if you feel like writing and start writing but then lose momentum, you can stop there, or you can write what you thought one day and continue it on another day.
Having a diary, which is a free format that allows any style of writing, relieved me of the pressure to properly summarize my impressions.
I really like the way of keeping records that are not related to finishing a book, and the way of writing sentences that are not focused on impressions.
Every time I come across phrases like "I haven't been able to read recently" or "I'm not sure if I understand it properly,"
I think to myself that this style is recommended.
So here it is, Reads.
Instead of "What did you feel when you read this book?",
the question that Reads asks is "What are you reading recently?"
"I'm reading this right now," "I'm interested in this book."
The idea is that a record of your reading will be created as a result of repeated output in a casual manner, like chatting with a friend about your recent reading.
We also aim to create a place like a reading plaza that is fun even for people who don't want to keep records.
So that your hobby doesn't turn into a chore. And if you have some desire to output something (← this is me), you can continue to do it in a way that doesn't become a burden.
So that you can just enjoy it all the time without feeling a sense of incompleteness that you don't need.
So that you can celebrate the days you spend reading.
So that many people can enjoy reading in the same way as listening to music.
Reads wants to create a plaza where a variety of reading words flourish, not just completion and impressions.
