SBD V/Q

V/Q mismatch is at the heart of respiratory support. SBD V/Q is an interactive teaching cartoon of

ventilation–perfusion mismatch — how air (V) must meet blood (Q) in the lung.

See three units side by side:

Matched — blue blood turns red

Shunt — blood with no air; stays blue

Dead space — air with no blood

Drag A–a and FiO2. Restore room air. Watch PaO2 in blood versus PAO2 in the alveolus, Mix

SaO2, and why raising oxygen helps low V/Q but shrugs at true shunt.

Tabs

Play — three units, gases, chips (Normal, Atelectasis, Embolus, Mixed)

Shunt — Qs/Qt, the 100% oxygen test, unused air

TYPE 1&2 — hypoxaemic versus hypercapnic failure

Res — the papers this cartoon stands on

Book and Math — the written walk and the teaching equations

For students, residents, and teachers of physiology and intensive care. Simulated units only.

This is not a medical device. Do not use V/Q to diagnose, treat, monitor, or decide ventilation for a

real patient. Educational use only. Not for clinical use.
