Public speaking is an activity that almost everyone will encounter in their lives, whether it be in a meeting, an interview, a classroom, or for the more ambitious of us, in front of thousands of people during a campaign. It also happens to be an activity that is hard to master. Most people tend to use fillers like "um," "like," and "you know" in their everyday speech, which can be distracting. Because we often do it almost subconsciously, it's something that is hard to improve (try this yourself!).

This is where our app comes in -- it records your speech and analyzes in real time the number of times you use these filler words and updates a counter. Once you are done you can play back, view your filler word total or share your recording. We also allow you to customize the app to focus on specific filler words and provide statistics so you can track your improvement.

Our algorithm isn't perfect, sometimes it doesn't pick up every filler word and occasionally has false positives if you say the word "um" as part of another work like "umbrella" but it can help you identify which filler words you use and approximate how often you use them. The statistics page will also reflect the improvement of your speech. Our app is built off of CMU Sphinx an open source phoneme detector.
