Campeonato Carioca de Futebol (whose official title is Rio de Janeiro State Championship) is the main competition between the soccer teams of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the state level.

The championship of the present State of Rio de Janeiro has been played since 1979, after the merger between the Rio de Janeiro Football Federation and the Fluminense Football Federation, forming FERJ in September 1978, three years after the merger between the state of Guanabara and the former State of Rio de Janeiro, whose capital was Niterói. Until then, there were the Carioca and Fluminense championships, in addition to the Fluminense de Seleções.

Because of tradition and because it is the culture of greater expression in the modern State of Rio de Janeiro, the term Carioca was maintained in the title of the tournament that happened to cover the whole State. Officially, Rio is referring only to the capital. Popularly and culturally, however, Carioca is the gentílico most used by the majority of the population and the gentílico by which its inhabitants are usually known outside the State of Rio de Janeiro, being Carioca the gentílico de facto of Rio de Janeiro. Currently, some social groups seek the recognition of the ALERJ of Rio as a co-official State Gentile, along with the former Gentile from Rio de Janeiro.

The first season of the championship, related to the then Federal District, was played in 1906 and is therefore the third oldest state competition in the country, behind the Paulista Championship and the Bahia Championship. The first match for the Campeonato Carioca was played on May 3, 1906 in Campo de Guanabara street, in Laranjeiras neighborhood, and the result was Fluminense 7 to 1 Paissandu, with the first goal in history being scored by the tricolor striker Horácio da Costa .

Until the 60's, the championships were disputed by points system, having several times a champion by anticipation. Time and again, it was agreed in the last round that two clubs face each other while in contention for the title. Only twice the championship was decided out of the city of Rio de Janeiro, the first, soon in the initial edition, in 1906, decided in the city of Niterói, in the Field of the River Cricket and Athletic Association. Already the decision of the tournament of 2013 occurred in the city of Volta Redonda, in the Stadium Raulino de Oliveira.
