Tic-Tac-Toe originated as a pencil-and-paper game for two players, Nought & Cross (or X & O), who take turns marking the spaces in a grid. The goal is for a player to place 3 of their marks in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line to win the game.

The game is also known as Noughts & Crosses, Naughts & Crosses, Xs & Os, Exy-Ozys, Xsie-Osies, Tick-Tack-Toe & Tick-Tat-Toe.
