It is twenty-one years since the last human birth and the world was running out of food. The planet's population was 33 billion, but most of the earth had become water, so there wasn't enough land to produce crops.

The government had to find a solution and they found it. They created a virtual reality called the Matrix and made people plug into it for eight hours a day, except for the elderly who needed to stay connected for twelve hours in order to work.

When you plug in, you're killed in the virtual world and brought back to life with a new body. But nobody has ever escaped from the Matrix because nobody knows how to get out. That's when one of them discovers how to leave and takes off
