About Wawa (Kichwa del río Tigre)

Mobile application for children to learn the Kichwa language of the Tigre River

It is an application for cell phones and tablets (Android Operating System) for children from 3 to 5 years old to learn through images and sounds the basic contents about the alphabet, numbers, family, colors, parts of the human body, animals, fruits and basic expressions in the Kichwa language of the Tigre River.

This app is aimed at serving as instruments to strengthen and promote linguistic revitalization processes that arise with the new generations.

The Kichwa people are made up of those descendants of Amazonian indigenous peoples who were ‘Quechuized’ by missionaries since the 16th century. The Quechua language was implanted on various peoples, causing the disappearance of many original languages and, in other cases, reducing its use to a few individuals. Despite having diverse origins, the Kichwa groups share a certain common identity as a people.

Together with the Maijuna people and the Regional Government of Loreto, the Kichwa were the protagonists of the first prior consultation process in our country, carried out within the framework of Law 29785, Law of the Right to Prior Consultation of Indigenous or Native Peoples. This dialogue process was carried out on the proposal to establish the Maijuna-Kichwa Regional Conservation Area (ACR), having concluded the stage of dialogue with agreements reached by the parties. Through Decree No. 008-2015- MINAM, the establishment of the aforementioned ACR was approved.

It is possible to differentiate four large groups that make up the Kichwa people; These are located in three departments of the country: the Kichwa of the Napo River and those of the Pastaza and Tigre rivers, settled in the department of Loreto; the Kichwa lamistas or de Lamas, in the department of San Martín; and the Kichwa who have been known as santarrosinos, in the department of Madre de Dios. According to the results of the 2017 national censuses, 267 people have identified themselves as part of the Kichwa people at the national level due to their customs and ancestors; and by the language or mother tongue with which they learned to speak in their childhood, there have been 3,805,531 people who have stated that they speak the Quechua language, which corresponds to 84.9% of the total native languages nationwide. In addition, the data obtained by the Ministry of Culture, the population of the communities of the Kichwa people is estimated at 71,311 people.
