Blueprinting is the standard method used to copy architectural drawings and large constructs. A blueprint used consists of white lines on a blue background. A newer process uses a blue line on a white background. The term blueprint is usually used to describe two printing methods, blueprint and diazotype. Blueprint is an older method, discovered in 1842. The image to be copied, made on transparent paper, is placed on sensitive paper with a mixture of ammonium citrate iron and potassium ferricyanide. The sensitive paper is then placed onto the light. Where the field of sensitive paper is not obscured by the image, light makes two chemicals react to form blue. The paper is then washed in water. This is what generates a negative image, with images appearing in white with a dark blue background. In the diazotype method, light-sensitive paper with a mixture of diazonium salts (used in the manufacture of dyes), reactants, and acids that make the diazonium salts and reactants react with each other. The original image is above the semi-transparent layer, placed on sensitive paper, and the copying process of the same size as the original is made by direct contact. Light destroys the diazonium salt. The gas or ammonia solution is used as the developer after exposure, neutralizes the acid and allows the remaining diazonium salt to coalesce with the reactant to produce a blue color. Chemicals on paper obtain color only in areas that are not exposed to light. This method produces a diazotype black line on a white background, and is a popular method used today for large format image reproduction.
