The Crimean War of 1853-1856 did not bypass the Azov region. In the spring of 1855, the British and French, in order to isolate the Crimea from the rest of Russia and stop the supply of weapons and food, decided to launch an operation in the Sea of ​​Azov.

On May 22, 1855, the Anglo-French squadron, after the defeat of Kerch, Berdyansk and Mariupol, approached Taganrog to destroy warehouses with food and uniforms intended for the besieged Sevastopol. To the proposal to surrender the city, the marching ataman I. I. Krasnov and the military governor E. P. Tolstoy replied “Taganrog is not a fortress, we have no guns. Come ashore, and we will measure our strength and, if yours takes, we will lie down to the last. The shelling of the peaceful city continued for six and a half hours. Then a landing force was landed on the shore and the enemy launched an offensive in three columns.

In Taganrog, there were practically no modern fortifications and artillery, and the garrison consisted of a semi-battalion of internal guards, four hundred Don Cossacks of the 68th Krasnyansky regiment and six hundred training Cossack regiment from Novocherkassk.

To help the garrison, voluntary militia, one and a half hundred customs officials, hospital and gendarmerie teams were organized. The total number of defenders of Taganrog was just over 2 thousand people.

During the skirmish and bayonet attacks, the Anglo-French landing force was driven back into the sea. The shelling of the city continued until the end of the day. Periodically shelling continued until the end of August, but Taganrog did not submit. And the defenders of the city even managed to capture the stranded English gunboat Jasper, removing two cannons, flags and signal code books from it. After the end of the Crimean War, the feat of the people of Taganrog was highly appreciated by the emperors Alexander II - 166 people were awarded orders and medals, and the city itself was exempt from taxes for 2 years.

The international festival "Defense of Taganrog in 1855" is an annual traditional full-scale historical festival, founded in 2016 and reflecting one of the brightest events of the Crimean War of 1853-1856. in the Sea of ​​\u200b\u200bAzov - the defense of the city of Taganrog. The festival entered the federal TOP-5 of the best festivals, holidays and events in Russia on weekends in October 2018.

The purpose of the festival "Defense of Taganrog in 1855" is to remind contemporaries of an undeservedly forgotten page of their native history and, with the help of reconstruction, "revive" these heroic events, clearly showing the feat of their ancestors.

At this festival, hundreds of reenactors and organizers unite to show the residents and guests of the city the importance of Taganrog's participation in the Crimean War.
